Christmas time is truly magical in New York City, it’s one of the best times to visit. There is so much to and sometimes that it can be overwhelming, but don’t let that stop you.

Whether you want to see the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, spend the day with Santa at Macy’s, or go spend time exploring the various winter markets – here is the ultimate guide for the 15 best things to do for Christmas in New York!

The Iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

Featured in various movies, you can’t come to New York City and not see the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree! Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, this tradition began in 1931, during the Depression era. Italian-American construction workers decorated a small 20-foot tree on Christmas Eve.

This tradition has been going on every year since, and has become a highlight of the winter activities in New York City. Visitors can shop, skate on the ice rink beneath the tree, and enjoy warm beverages and drinks.

If you’re planning to visit the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, I highly recommend coming during the week around early afternoon, before it gets too crowded. Expect huge crowds during late nights and weekends.

A Winter Wonderland at Central Park

There are so many great winter activities to do at Central Park, that it can be hard to choose! However, these three are my favorites that make the park even more magical during the holidays.

Imagine snuggling under a warm blanket as you ride through Central Park in a charming horse-drawn carriage. The snow-covered paths and twinkling lights create a cozy and romantic atmosphere, perfect for the holidays. It’s like stepping into a winter fairy tale!

Ice skating at Wollman Rink

Ice skating at Wollman Rink is a must-do winter activity in Central Park. Whether you’re a seasoned skater or a beginner, the stunning skyline views and festive music make for an unforgettable experience. Skate across the ice with friends or family and soak in the holiday atmosphere.

Exploring the park’s winter beauty

Strolling through Central Park during winter is a magical experience. The snow-dusted trees and frozen lakes offer breathtaking views and peaceful moments. Take your time to explore the park’s hidden gems and enjoy the calm beauty of the season.

Christmas Decorations Outside of Rockefeller Center

Holiday Window Displays on Fifth Avenue

One of my favorite activities as a kid was walking down Fifth Avenue and watching all of the holiday window displays! They were always SO creative and unique and kept getting better each year.

For young kids, you have to head to Macy’s Santaland and festive displays! Parents will rejoice to learn that admission to Santaland is free, but you do need to have a reservation!

Another must-see window display is Bergdorf Goodman’s Christmas windows. They’re known to be extravagant, have lots of color, and they always catch your eye with their fun and imaginative holiday scenes.

When you’re strolling down Fifth Avenue, make sure to stop by Saks Fifth Avenue. Their light show on the building’s facade is simply magical, and the themed windows are always a holiday highlight. Over at Tiffany & Co., you’ll find elegant and glittering displays that are as luxurious as the jewelry inside, making it a must-see.

Lastly, don’t miss the stunning windows at Lord & Taylor, where the intricate designs and festive decorations are sure to captivate both kids and adults. Each display on Fifth Avenue adds its own sparkle to the holiday season, making it a winter wonderland worth exploring.

The Magic of Dyker Heights Christmas Lights

A famous tradition in New York City is the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights. It starts the day after Thanksgiving each year. The neighborhood runs from Gravesend Bay from Seventh to 14th Avenues and from the Belt Parkway to 65th Street.

You can join a tour group or you can go for free! If you do decide to go on your own, make sure to get there early because parking does go by fast. However you decide to get there, it will definitely be worth it because it’s such an amazing experience to walk through Dyker Heights during this holiday!

Enchanting Christmas Markets

There are so many great Christmas Markets to explore in New York City! It’s one of my favorite activities to do during the holidays.

Some of my favorites are:

Union Square Holiday Market:

This one is my personal favorite holiday market! I’ve been going here since high school and I love shopping at all of the stores and eating the delicious food! This winter holiday market has 150+ outdoor vendors that sell food, art, crafts, and home accessories. It’s located in Union Square Park. They usually open mid-November, and stay open until December 24th. Hours are Monday – Friday 11a – 8p, Saturday 10a – 8pm, and Sunday 11am – 7pm.

Columbus Circle Holiday Market

Another great holiday is the Columbus Circle Holiday Market. It’s located at Columbus Circle near Central Park. They have over 100 vendors selling arts, crafts, food, homemade jewelry, home goods, and designers. The market has a European flair, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a charming European village. They will be open from November 28th – December 31st. The hours are Monday to Saturday from 11am – 8pm and Sunday from 11am – 7pm.

Bryant Park Winter Village

Bryant Park Winter Village is a must-visit during the holiday season. Nestled in the heart of Midtown, it features over 170 vendors offering unique gifts, delicious food, and handcrafted items. You can also enjoy a free ice-skating rink, making it a perfect spot for some festive fun. The village has a cozy, European-inspired vibe that makes you feel like you’re in a winter wonderland. They are open from October 27th – January 2nd, with hours from Monday to Friday, 11am – 8pm, and weekends from 10am – 8pm.

Festive Performances and Shows

When visiting New York City you have to go see a show! As a kid, my family and I would always go to The Radio City Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes. This year they start on November 8th and will be running until January 5th, 2025. Tickets range from $56 – $340 (before taxes.)

Another great show is The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center. This classic ballet, performed by the New York City Ballet, brings the enchanting story of Clara and her magical journey to life. With breathtaking sets, beautiful costumes, and Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, it’s a holiday tradition that shouldn’t be missed! The Nutcracker runs from November 29th to January 5th, 2025, offering plenty of opportunities to catch this unforgettable performance.

If you’re a fan of Broadway, don’t miss the seasonal productions like “A Christmas Carol.” This heartwarming adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic tale is brought to life with stunning visuals and a fantastic cast, capturing the essence of Christmas. It’s a perfect show to enjoy with family and friends. Performances start on December 1 – 30th, 2024, so make sure to get your tickets early! Prices range from $40 – $100.

Cozy Up in Holiday-Themed Bars

When you’re ready to warm up and enjoy some festive drinks, head to one of NYC’s holiday-themed bars. Miracle on 9th Street is a must-visit, transforming into a festive cocktail haven with creative drinks and over-the-top decorations.

For a true Christmas feel, check out Rolf’s German Restaurant, where the ceiling is covered in ornaments and lights, creating a magical vibe. There are plenty of other themed bars around the city where you can cozy up with a holiday drink and soak in the seasonal spirit.

Seasonal Eats and Treats

Get ready to indulge in some of NYC’s best seasonal eats and treats! Dominique Ansel Bakery’s holiday-themed pastries are a must-try, with creative and delicious goodies that perfectly capture the festive spirit.

For a delicious meal, head over to Tavern on the Green. The enchanting setting and seasonal menu make it a dining experience you won’t forget! And don’t miss out on other holiday treats around the city, from cozy cafes serving up the best hot chocolate to renowned bakeries with holiday-themed desserts. There’s something sweet and festive waiting for you at every corner!

Picture-Perfect Holiday Photo Spots

If you’re looking to capture some magical holiday memories, start with The Lotte New York Palace Hotel’s decorations. Their stunning holiday displays make for the perfect backdrop for your festive photos.

Next, head over to The Plaza Hotel, where the elegant and festive setup is straight out of a holiday movie. And don’t forget to explore other scenic spots around the city – there are plenty of beautiful places to snap that perfect holiday photo!

Winter Sports and Outdoor Fun

Get ready for some winter fun in NYC! Sledding at Pilgrim Hill in Central Park is a classic way to enjoy a snowy day – it’s so much fun for adults and kids.
