Park Slope has changed over the years, but it has always kept its unique charm! Many young families live in the neighborhood, which makes it a fantastic place to raise kids. There’s always something going on, whether it’s grabbing a bite at trendy restaurants or soaking in the local history.

But Park Slope is more than just a great place to live. It’s a place where the past meets the present. As you walk around, you’ll see beautiful old buildings next to modern shops and cafes, showing off the neighborhood’s mix of old charm with new twists.

One thing everyone loves about Park Slope is how it keeps its old-school charm while still feeling modern. You can see this in the classic brownstone houses and the tree-lined streets that feel like stepping back in time, yet everything you need today is right here too.

Historic Landmarks and Museums

For all my history lovers, there are a ton of historic site & landmarks you’re going to love visiting at the Brooklyn Historical Society & the Old Stone House!

Brooklyn Historical Society is a museum, library, and education center that was founded in 1863. It maintains the study of Brooklyn’s 400-year history. Open Monday through Saturday from 10a – 6 pm EST. It’s a must-visit! Their current exhibit is “Brooklyn Is..” running through December 31, 2024. It explores the neighborhoods and people of Brooklyn! 

The Old Stone House is another great museum in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Perfect for a family outing, where they have open hours, special events, and you can even host your own event! They are open Fridays through Sundays from 12p – 4p EST. 

The Brooklyn Museum is the perfect place to spend the afternoon, General admission is suggested as they have a pay-as-you-wish model, making it a great activity for an affordable price (as low as $1). Anyone 19 and under or a Care Partner is free to enter! However, if you wanted to go to a ticketed exhibition, you would have to purchase a separate ticket. Get tickets here.

Green-Wood Cemetery is not just any old cemetery; it’s a slice of history and a peaceful green oasis right in Brooklyn. Famous for its stunning views and beautiful old statues and mausoleums, it’s a great spot for a quiet walk or to learn a bit about the past. Plus, it’s recognized as a National Historic Landmark!

Washington Park

Washington Park is a charming gem located on 5th Avenue, ideal for those seeking a more intimate outdoor experience. Whether you’re laying down a blanket for a picnic, wanting to skate in the skatepark, shooting hoops, or letting your dogs run free at the dog park, this park has something for everyone. It’s also a wonderful spot for community events and gatherings, making it a central hub for locals looking to enjoy a day under the sun or a beautiful summer evening outdoors.

Parks and Outdoor Activities

The weather is finally blooming in New York City, and one of my favorite activities to do is spend the day in Prospect Park (some say the heart of Park Slope!) The best times to go is on Saturday mornings for their weekly farmer’s market at Grand Army Plaza, or on Sunday afternoon for Smorgasburg! A great idea for grabbing some bites to eat and having a picnic in the park! 

Here are some of my favorite spots for picnics in Prospect Park: 

• Long Meadow: This nearly mile-long stretch is one of the longest uninterrupted meadows in any urban U.S. park, making it a popular choice for picnics, kite flying, and relaxing in the sun. It offers plenty of space to find a quiet spot even on busy days.
• Nethermead: Located away from the main attractions, Nethermead offers a serene setting with scenic meadows and a pond, perfect for a more secluded picnic experience.
• The Picnic House: South of the Long Meadow, The Picnic House provides a charming backdrop for gatherings, with nearby areas that are ideal for larger picnics and events.
• Concert Grove: Known for its historical significance and architectural beauty, this area near the Oriental Pavilion is surrounded by statues of notable composers and offers a cultural twist to your picnic outing.
• Lookout Hill: Offering some of the best views of the park, Lookout Hill is a wonderful choice for those who enjoy a picnic with a scenic overlook.

The hidden waterfalls of Prospect Park

The sun’s out in Brooklyn, and what better way to enjoy it than exploring Prospect Park? Right near the Old Stone House, there are some pretty cool hidden waterfalls that most people don’t even know about. It’s like stumbling upon a little secret garden! These spots are perfect for escaping the city and enjoying a bit of nature.

If you’re up for a mini-adventure, check out the Ravine where you’ll find the calming Ambergill Falls. Trust me, it’s a total gem and a great escape from the usual park spots. Plus, there’s a self-guided audio tour by the Prospect Park Alliance that tells you all about these hidden waterways. So grab your walking shoes, and maybe a snack from the farmer’s market on Saturday or some goodies from Smorgasburg on Sunday, and discover these secret falls. It’s a great way to chill and soak in some nature!

Brooklyn Botanic Garden: Nature in the City

Looking for a fresh spot to hit up after visiting Prospect Park? Don’t miss the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, especially if you’re around in the spring. Entry will be $18 for adults, but kids under 12 get in for free. If you’re visiting in April you can experience the cherry blossoms, which will be in full swing then, and it’s very picturesque! 

I used to love going to the Prospect Park Zoo, but unfortunately, it is temporarily closed! 

Shopping in Park Slope

Park Slope is a great place to shop! The main place to shop is on 5th Avenue, where they have the best shops, bookstores, and local artisan goods.

Park Slope is a great place to eat out and get good food with its countless restaurants! There are tons of cozy cafes, vegan and vegetarian options, and brunch spots.

Here are some of my favorite popular restaurants:

VSPOT – I LOVE VSPOT! This place offers an amazing array of Latin-inspired vegan dishes. Known for its hearty and flavorful meals, it’s a must-visit for anyone looking for a plant-based option with a twist. They also sometimes have comedy shows that are another great entertainment option! 

Dao Palate – A haven for lovers of Pan-Asian cuisine and very affordable, Dao Palate serves a range of vegan dishes that are both flavorful and satisfying. From summer rolls to General Tso’s soy protein, their menu is diverse and delicious.

Earthen – This vegan restaurant prides itself on globally inspired dishes that unite various cuisines under the banner of vegan cooking. They focus on fresh and sustainable ingredients, Earthen offers a menu that’s both innovative and environmentally conscious.

Kos Kaffe Roasting House – This charming cafe is great for coffee lovers and those looking for a cozy place to work or relax. With a great selection of coffee, teas, and food, it’s a lovely spot to unwind any time of day.

If you’re seeking a relaxing evening, head over to Ginger’s Bar on 5th Avenue, a popular spot known for its welcoming vibe and diverse crowd. It’s the perfect place to unwind with friends over a drink and enjoy some live performances, adding that unique experience to your night out.

For live music lovers, 7th Avenue is home to some fantastic venues that showcase local talent. These intimate settings provide a unique atmosphere where you can connect with the music and the performers in a way that larger venues can’t match.

One of my favorite movie theaters in Brooklyn is Nitehawk Cinema on Prospect Park West, which offers more than just movies. This boutique theater combines film with thematic live events and performances. Whether you’re there to catch the latest release or a classic, Nitehawk promises a fun and memorable night out!
