How to Plan the Perfect Warm Getaway This October

Wishing for a warm getaway this fall? Don’t let summer end, make you feel that you still can’t spend time in a nice destination that still feels warm! Personally, I feel like it’s better to travel during the offseason because it’s cheaper, fewer tourists, and you can still enjoy all that these destinations have to offer in the summer! That’s why October is one of my favorite months to travel! 

It’s perfect if you want to spend time relaxing on the beach, visit iconic coastal towns, or escape to tropical islands. There are tons of great options this time of the year. In this blog, I’ll share 11 warm getaway destinations where you can leave your coats behind and soak up the sun in your swimwear. These locations will vary from U.S. cities to Caribbean islands and gorgeous spots in Europe!

11 Warm Getaways in October

Kauai, Hawaii

Hawaii is a dream vacation for most people! It has definitely been on my bucket list. If you’re looking to visit Kauai and not break the bank, then October is the perfect time to visit. In October, the weather is still warm, from the 70s to the 80s F, and there are fewer tourists compared to the summertime.

It’s known for its lush landscapes, waterfalls, and gorgeous beaches! It’s perfect for nature lovers and travelers who love a bit of relaxation and adventure. 

What to Do:

  • Explore Waimea Canyon (the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”).
  • Boat or helicopter tour of the Napali Coast.
  • Spend time at Hanalei Bay for kayaking and paddleboarding.

Although it is warm during this time, I highly recommend bringing a rain jacket. Kauai is known for its tropical rain!

Palm Springs, California

Another great sunny destination is Palm Springs (and it’s honestly one of my favorites!) Palm Springs is a desert, so it’s warm year-round. During October, it’s in the high 80s, but you don’t have to deal with the excessive heat like you would if you were visiting in the summer. It’s known for its resort pools, iconic desert landscapes, and modern architecture. 

It’s great for couples, singles, or friend groups who want to chill by the pool and enjoy the desert. I think it’s best to book a retro boutique hotel to have the best experience.

What to Do:

  • Ride the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway for mountain views.
  • Explore art galleries and boutique shopping downtown.
  • Plan a day trip to Joshua Tree National Park.

Key West, Florida

I went to Key West, Florida, when I was a little girl, and it was honestly one of my favorite trips as a kid! The iconic Key West drive from the Florida Keys Overseas Highway (US Highway 1) to Key West is engraved in my brain. 

It was the perfect getaway for hot, sunny weather and not too humid. Plus, fewer tourists! In Key West, you can enjoy water sports, island vibes, and its fantastic nightlife! It’s the perfect couple or friend trip.

What to Do:

  • Watch the sunset at Mallory Square.
  • Snorkel or dive at Dry Tortugas National Park.
  • Explore Duval Street’s shops, bars, and live music.

When you’re there, don’t forget to try an authentic Key Lime pie

Charleston, South Carolina

If you’re looking for a place that is more historic and has a taste for southern food, then Charleston is the right place for you! In October, it’s still warm (mid-70s) and has fewer tourists than their busy season. Charleston is known for its amazing southern food, gorgeous beaches, and historic downtown that’s perfect for spending hours walking around their cobblestone streets!

What to Do:

  • Walk along Rainbow Row and take a carriage tour.
  • Relax at Folly Beach or Sullivan’s Island.
  • Take a ghost tour for a fun fall twist.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Mexico is on my bucket list of countries to visit this year, and Puerto Vallarta is right up there! During the summer, it’s usually crowded, and you deal with the rainy season. However, by October, the rain slows and it gradually switches to their dry season. 

Puerto Vallarta is known for its nightlife, beautiful beaches, and amazing cultural experiences. It’s the perfect place for people who want to chill on the beach, but also have a great nightlife. October is also an ideal month for travelers who are budget-conscious. 

What to Do:

  • Stroll the Malecón Boardwalk.
  • Take a snorkeling trip to Los Arcos Marine Park.
  • Wander Old Town for authentic food and shopping.

Caye Caulker, Belize

Caye Caulker will always have a special place in my heart. I was lucky to spend a few days on this gorgeous island, and the people, food, and water activities were unreal. It’s known for its laid-back island life and stunning reef snorkeling! During October, it’s at the end of the rainy season, but it’s still warm in the high 80s.

Caye Caulker is perfect for travelers who want a slow, laid-back, beach/island experience. This island has no cars, and you can either walk around the island or rent golf carts. They have great local foods as well!

What to Do:

  • Snorkel at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley.
  • Relax at “The Split,” the island’s famous hangout spot.
  • Rent a bike or golf cart to explore car-free streets.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini, Greece, is on everyone’s travel bucket list as a dream vacation. The best time to go is when the summer crowds are gone, but the weather is still nice and sunny, so that you can enjoy the island. Santorini is known for its gorgeous sunsets, whitewashed villages, volcanic landscape, and breathtaking views. 

The weather is still warm in the 70s, and you can enjoy swimming in the Aegean Sea, take a boat tour to the volcanic islands, and join wine tours to drink local wines.

What to Do:

  • Watch the sunset in Oia.
  • Visit black sand beaches like Kamari.
  • Explore Akrotiri’s ruins or hike from Fira to Oia.

Algarve, Portugal

Portugal is one of my favorite countries that I’ve ever stayed in! This past May, I spent a week in Portugal, and four of those days I spent in the Algarve, specifically Lagos and Faro, and I couldn’t have fallen more in love with those places. The beaches are unreal, the food is SO good, and it’s such an affordable country, especially if you’re on a budget! 

If you are a solo traveler or want to spend less and still enjoy the Algarve, there are some amazing hostels you can visit! The two hostels that I stayed in were Top City Hostel & Suites in Lagos, and Madalena Hostel e Suites

The Algarve is known for its dramatic cliffs, clear waters, and charming towns. 

What to Do:

  • Explore Lagos’ coastline and Ponta da Piedade.
  • Take a boat trip to Benagil Cave.
  • Relax at Praia da Marinha, one of Europe’s top beaches.

Barbados

Barbados is an amazing Caribbean island, and I love it every time I’ve visited! If you want to explore and not break the bank, then October is the perfect time to go! This is their off-season, so you’ll get fewer tourists, which brings better hotel deals for your wallet. They are known for their friendly locals and white sand beaches. 

October is also the transition from their rainy season to their drier season! The weather is still very warm, with it being in the high 80s, so it’s perfect to enjoy the beach and take a swim. Plus, if you’re a rum lover, then they have great rum tours that explain the history, and while you enjoy local rums. (The perfect day!)

What to Do:

  • Relax at Crane Beach or Miami Beach.
  • Visit Mount Gay Rum Distillery for a taste of history.
  • Snorkel with turtles or explore Harrison’s Cave.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

As a Puerto Rican, Puerto Rico will always have a special place in my heart. The island is truly special, and if you’ve never visited before, then San Juan is the perfect city to start in! If you’re worried your Spanish is not up to par, the majority of locals in this city also know English.

In October, San Juan is known for its warm Caribbean weather, with fewer crowds and cheaper hotel rates. The weather is still very warm, with temperatures going as high as 86°F. The Old Town is known for its colorful streets, gorgeous beaches, and some of the best nightlife out there! 

What to Do:

  • Walk through Old San Juan’s cobblestone streets and historic forts.
  • Relax at Condado Beach or Isla Verde.
  • Take a day trip to El Yunque National Forest.

Maui, Hawaii

Want to explore more of the island? Then Maui in Hawaii is another great destination for you! Like Kaui, it’s warm and sunny, with cheaper flights compared to its busy season (winter). Maui is known for its gorgeous landscapes, stunning beaches, volcanic craters, and rich rainforest. 

October is the end of the dry season, but the weather is still warm with average highs in the mid-80s F. Plus, the humidity is not as bad compared to other months. For swim lovers, this might be the best month to visit because Maui’s water is at its warmest. 

What to Do:

  • Drive the Road to Hana for scenic waterfalls.
  • Snorkel at Molokini Crater.
  • Watch the sunrise or sunset from Haleakalā National Park.

October Warm Getaways

Hopefully, these 11 warm getaways in October have shown you that just because the weather is getting colder where you are, it doesn’t mean you still can’t have your warm vacation somewhere else! Personally, I believe traveling during the shoulder season is better because you still get the best of what these destinations have to offer for a fraction of the price and fewer tourists to deal with!
