The Ultimate Study Abroad Guide: Australia

Congrats, You’re Considering studying abroad in Sydney!

So, you’re thinking about studying abroad in Sydney? That’s fantastic! I spent a semester down under during my junior year, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of amazing. Before you start packing your bags and dreaming of the Opera House and Bondi Beach, there are a few things you should know to make the most of your experience.

Choosing the Right Study Abroad Program

Picking the right program is crucial. When I was searching for which country and city I wanted to go to there were a lot of different options.

Sydney is known for its large, vibrant educational institutions like the University of Sydney and UNSW (which I went to!), where the student body is diverse and massive. As someone from a university of less than 5,000 students, UNSW seemed overwhelming, but I wanted something different.

Make sure to ask yourself:

  • Do I prefer a large university or a smaller college vibe?
  • How important is having support far from home?
  • What are my academic and personal goals for this study abroad?

I initially felt more like a number than a person at a big uni, but over time I was able to make new friends, try new experiences, and the independence was incredibly rewarding. So think about what you really want out of this experience!

Save Before You Go!

Listen, Sydney is not cheap! Before you go, make sure you have saved up at least $5,000 if you want to be able to enjoy your time there. On the bright side, the USD is stronger than the AUD, so you’ll get more bang for your buck!

I knew I wanted to travel and go out without any money worries, so I hustled through college to save up for my trip. Whether through part-time jobs or summer gigs, having that financial cushion means you can enjoy weekend trips and nights out without too much stress.

Explore Sydney, Not Just Australia

While it’s tempting to jet off to Bali or New Zealand at every chance, remember why you chose Sydney. Spend weekends checking out local markets, beaches, and neighborhoods like Newtown or Surry Hills. There’s so much to see and do right there in the city, and really immersing yourself in one place gives you a deeper understanding and appreciation of the culture.

Stay Safe and Savvy

Coming from New York, I thought I knew all about staying safe in a big city. However, the relaxed Aussie vibe (or nearby countries) can make it easy to let your guard down. Always keep an eye on your belongings, especially in tourist-heavy areas. Consider a money belt or a secure cross-body bag. And always have digital backups of important documents like your passport and visa!

Final Thoughts: Embrace Every Moment!

Studying in Sydney was one of the most enriching experiences of my life. It challenged me, changed my worldview, and gave me friendships I’ll treasure forever. Prepare to fall in love with every sunset and café chat—you won’t regret it.
