Safety First: What Makes a Destination Great for Solo Female Travelers?
Before you start packing and getting on a plane, let’s talk about safety. Just because we are women doesn’t mean we can’t explore the world by ourselves, but no matter where we go safety should be our number one priority.
Let people know where you’re going before you go! If anything happens to you, you don’t want to leave the people back home worried. Tell them your hotel, flights, and plans just to be safe.
Always make sure you have travel insurance. It’s a simple step that can save you a lot of headaches. Whether it’s a lost suitcase or a sudden medical issue, having travel insurance means you’re covered. Plus, it gives you that extra peace of mind so you can fully enjoy your solo adventures, knowing you’re protected against the unexpected.
I’ve traveled to 6 out 7 of the continents, and most of the time everything went great. There were only a few times when I actually had issues, and each time I was able to keep in contact with family members and friends to let them know what had happened to me.
Also, growing up in New York City, safety has always been a top priority on my mind. Always be aware of your surroundings, make copies of ALL important documents, don’t put your money all in one place, and make sure not to carry valuables with you.
This is not to scare you out of going, but it’s always better to be prepared.
Top 6 Best Destinations For Female Solo Travelers
France
France was one of the first places I traveled to by myself! I’ve gone to the country a few times and I loved going to Paris and the South of France. France is safe to travel to as a female traveler and has so many activities to do!
I recommend going to Paris for your first time but don’t overlook taking the train down to the South of France. Places like Aix-en-Provence and Bordeaux are beautiful to visit in the summer and they have great cafes and wineries to go to and people watch. If you want to hit up the beaches, then Nice is your place!

Bali, Indonesia
Thinking of heading to Southeast Asia? Then Bali is a must-visit destination! When I was studying abroad in my junior year of college, I stayed in Sydney, Australia and I got to travel to nearby countries like Indonesia. I visited Bali for over a week and it was incredible! Bali is very affordable, making it perfect if you’re on a budget.
There are travelers from all over the world that come to Bali, making it a perfect place to meet a diverse group of people. I will say that I enjoyed the inland more than the beaches. Unfortunately, the beaches were not well taken care of, which is very sad. I’m not sure if they changed it since I’ve been there, but be aware of this!
I highly recommend getting a hostel in the inland where you can meet a lot of other travelers, enjoy yoga, and eat some really yummy food. If you’re feeling adventurous, then you should do water rafting and ATV driving while you’re there!
Canada
Canada is a perfect place for anyone who loves the outdoors! They have it all – beautiful nature and amazing cities perfect for solo travelers. If you’re from the USA, this is a great country to start your female solo travel because it’s nearby, they speak English, and it’s very safe! Plus, you’re dollar goes further in Canada.
For city lovers, I highly recommend Toronto or Montreal for the European vibes. If you love nature, Vancouver is the best of both worlds. They have gorgeous national parks such as Glacier National Park of Canada, Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, Kootenay National Park, and Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. I haven’t been to all of them, but they’re on my bucket list!
Scotland
If you’re planning a trip to the UK, make sure to include Scotland on your list! I absolutely adore visiting Glasgow and Edinburgh. Each city offers a unique charm, but they’re both stunning—especially for Harry Potter enthusiasts. And if you’re keen on nature, the Highlands are a must-see. They’re a perfect addition to any traveler’s itinerary.
There’s so much to do there with hiking, heading to the ocean, people-watching at the pubs, and visiting their numerous castles. You won’t be bored. Plus, the local festivals and street markets offer a taste of authentic Scottish culture. Whether you’re savoring a warm, fresh scone or tapping your feet to a live bagpipe performance, every moment feels like a scene from a storybook. Don’t forget to try the famous Scottish whisky; the distillery tours are fascinating!
Australia
Australia is one of my favorite places in the world! I’ve been three times so far, and I’m always counting the days to my next visit. There’s SO much to do from exploring the different beaches like the famous Bondi Beach, to exploring the outback.
Spend the day exploring their beaches, their food, and their vibrant cities. Whether you’re snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef or enjoying a fresh seafood platter in Sydney, Australia offers a seamless blend of adventure and relaxation. For solo female travelers, Australia is particularly welcoming, with its friendly locals and well-organized tourist infrastructure. It’s an ideal destination if you love the outdoors and want to experience everything from lush rainforests to modern, bustling cities—all in one trip!
England
England is another great place to travel for female solo travelers! There’s so much to see with cities like London that are bursting with food, culture, and history, a beach town like Brighton Beach. England has so much to offer. For food lovers, I highly recommend getting Indian food in London, they have an amazing selection.
There are also many pubs, shops, museums, castles, and live music. You can easily spend a week there and barely touch the surface. Don’t miss the chance to explore the picturesque countryside, where you can visit quaint villages and sprawling estates. Public transportation is excellent, making it easy to journey between vibrant city centers and serene natural landscapes. England not only captivates with its rich history and cultural tapestry but also offers a safe and friendly environment for solo female travelers.
Connecting with Other Solo Travelers
Hostels are a fantastic option for meeting fellow solo travelers on the road! They offer both mixed and single-sex dorm options. If you prefer a bit more privacy, you can opt for a private room, while still enjoying opportunities to connect with other travelers.
Many hostels organize daily events and nighttime outings to explore the local area. I highly recommend joining walking tours as well. Not only do you learn more about the city or town you’re visiting, but it’s also a great chance to meet other travelers and share experiences.
