Summer in New York City is a time when the city truly comes alive with endless possibilities for exploration and adventure. It’s a very special time to be visiting (or living) in New York City.
In my previous bucket list, I covered some iconic spots across the boroughs.
Now, let’s dive deeper into each borough—Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island—and uncover ten more must-do activities that will make your summer unforgettable.
Let’s dive in!
Manhattan
1. Visit The Cloisters:
Head uptown to transport yourself to medieval Europe at The Cloisters, a branch of the Met dedicated to the art and architecture of the Middle Ages. Wander through serene gardens and marvel at the stunning collection of medieval art. Tickets are $30, and it’s definitely worth it!
2. Take a Sunset Sail:
Enjoy the gorgeous views of the city on a sunset sail around Manhattan. There are several companies that will take you past iconic landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and under the Brooklyn Bridge just as the sun dips below the skyline. It’s the perfect activity to do in the summer months and get to see gorgeous views of the NYC skyline.
3. Attend Shakespeare in the Park:
Join the crowds at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park for Shakespeare in the Park, a fun summer tradition. Enjoy world-class theater under the stars, for free! However, tickets are required to get in. Join their mailing list to learn which shows are when!
4. Explore Governors Island:
Hop on a ferry to visit Governors Island for a day! It is a 172-acre island that is perfect for biking, picnicking, and exploring historic forts. Don’t miss the panoramic views of the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan from the island’s hills. It’s a great day trip away from the city!
5. Visit The High Line:
The High Line is a great way to explore Manhattan! The elevated park built on a historic freight rail line is the perfect break from the hustle and bustle of the city. At the High Line, you can enjoy gardens, art installations, and stunning views of the city skyline as you stroll above the bustling streets below.
6. Discover Little Italy:
Little Italy is an ICONIC neighborhood in Manhattan. Explore the flavors of Italy by indulging in authentic pasta dishes, cannoli, and espresso while soaking in the lively atmosphere of this historic neighborhood.
If you’re coming towards the end of summer, you can enjoy their annual street fair, “Feast of San Gennaro.” It will be held on 9/12 – 9/22 of 2024!
7. Tour The Tenement Museum:
If you’re a historical fan, then you’ll love to step back in time at the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side. Explore restored apartments and learn about the immigrant experience in New York City through interactive exhibits and guided tours. Tickets are $49 per adult.
8. Visit The Morgan Library & Museum:
When it’s too hot to be outside, immerse yourself in art, literature, and history at the Morgan Library & Museum. Spend time being in awe at rare books, manuscripts, and artwork housed in a stunning historic building that will take your breath away. For adults, it is $25 per ticket.
9. Kayak on the Hudson:
Just because you’re in an urban city, doesn’t mean you can’t experience water sports! Experience Manhattan from a different perspective by kayaking on the Hudson River. Several boathouses offer free kayaking sessions with breathtaking views of the skyline. (I will say be weary of the water!)
10. Picnic in Central Park:
If you’re coming to New York City, you need to visit Central Park! Grab a blanket, pack a picnic basket, and spend a day in NYC’s most iconic park. Find a shady spot near Bethesda Fountain or Sheep Meadow to relax, people-watch, and enjoy a leisurely afternoon.
Brooklyn
1. Smorgasburg:
One of my favorite summer activities is attending Smorgasburg! Feast your way through Smorgasburg, Brooklyn’s famous food market. Sample a diverse array of mouthwatering dishes from local vendors while enjoying views of the Manhattan skyline. Happens every Saturday afternoon in Williamsburg during the spring and summer months!
2. Brooklyn Botanic Garden:
Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a must-visit when coming to Brooklyn. Wander through the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s lush gardens and conservatories. Highlights include the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, Cherry Esplanade, and the serene Lily Pool Terrace. Tickets are $22 for adults.
3. Coney Island:
Need a break from the city? Spend a day at Coney Island! It’s home to Luna Park’s thrilling rides, Nathan’s Famous hot dogs, and the iconic Coney Island Beach and Boardwalk.
Don’t miss the Mermaid Parade if you’re there in late June. You can also catch a baseball game with the Brooklyn Cones.
4. Brooklyn Bridge Park:
If you walk through Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan, your next step should be to relax in Brooklyn Bridge Park! It offers stunning views of the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan skyline.
Perfect to play beach volleyball, take a spin on Jane’s Carousel, or enjoy a picnic by the waterfront.
5. Brooklyn Museum:
There are tons of great museums throughout Brooklyn, but I highly recommend visiting the Brooklyn Museum. It has an extensive art collection spanning ancient Egyptian artifacts to contemporary art installations.

6. Brooklyn Heights Promenade:
Another great park is Brooklyn Heights Promenade. Take a stroll along this beautiful park for breathtaking views of the Statue of Liberty, Lower Manhattan, and the Brooklyn Bridge!
7. Kayak in Brooklyn Bridge Park:
Need a fun free activity to do in NYC? Paddle along the East River with free kayaking sessions offered at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 2. Enjoy unforgettable views of the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan skyline from the water! They are offered on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and Saturday and Sunday evenings through September.
8. Attend BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival:
BRIC has been going on for 46 summers and is a great tradition! Experience live music, dance, and film screenings at the Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival in Prospect Park. It’s a summertime tradition featuring both emerging artists and established performers all for free!
9. Explore DUMBO:
Spend a day exploring through DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). A popular neighborhood in Brooklyn known for its cobblestone streets, art galleries, and stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and bridges. There’s so much to do there!
10. Brooklyn Brewery Tour:
For all my bear lovers, you need to take a tour of Brooklyn Brewery! Here you can learn about the brewing process behind their famous craft beers. Cap off your visit with a tasting session of their unique brews. It’s the perfect activity for a summer afternoon.
Bronx
1. New York Botanical Garden:
Discover the beauty of the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. It is a 250-acre site that has over one million living plants! Spend the day exploring diverse gardens, including the enchanting Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden and the serene Native Plant Garden. I went as a kid, and always have fond memories of this Botanical Garden.
2. Bronx Zoo:
Arguably the best zoo in the city, the Bronx Zoo is a must-visit if you’re spending time in the Bronx. As one of the largest metropolitan zoos in the world, it’s currently celebrating its 125th anniversary.
With over 6,000 animals representing species from around the globe, including many endangered and rare species, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Take a day to explore and marvel at the incredible wildlife.
3. Wave Hill:
Need an escape from the city? Take a trip to Wave Hill. It’s a beautiful public garden and cultural center overlooking the Hudson River. Enjoy a peaceful walk through colorful gardens and quiet woodlands.
Take in the stunning river views and check out the art exhibits and cultural events held here. It’s a perfect spot for nature lovers and anyone looking to relax and unwind.
4. Bronx Museum of the Arts:
Need a free activity to do? Head towards the Bronx Museum of Arts! It’s free for everyone and you enjoy contemporary art and cultural exhibitions. They offer a diverse range of exhibitions and programs. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon and enjoy some art.
5. Yankee Stadium Game:
It’s hard to come to New York City in the summer and not go to a baseball game. Buy a ticket and enjoy a fun game like a true New Yorker! You can also join a behind-the-scenes tour of Yankee Stadium. Explore the clubhouse, dugout, and Monument Park while learning about the team’s history.
6. City Island:
There are plenty of islands to visit when in NYC and City Island is great one to add to your list this summer. It’s a charming fishing village in the Bronx. Here you can enjoy fresh seafood at local restaurants, stroll along the waterfront, and explore the island’s local shops and galleries.
7. Explore Arthur Avenue:
If you love Italian food, then you need to check out Bronx’s own Littlle Italy and known as “Arthuer Avenue. ” Here you can experience the delicious restaurants of Arthur Avenue, the Bronx’s own Little Italy. Try traditional Italian pastries, cheeses, and fresh pasta from family-owned shops and markets.
8. Van Cortlandt Park:
Even in the Big Apple, there are tons of great parks to visit. One of them that should be on your lit is Van Cortlandt Park, one of New York City’s largest parks! Enjoy hiking trails, playing fields, and the Van Cortlandt House Museum, a historic house dating back to the 18th century.
9. Bronx River Greenway:
The Bronx River Greenway is a 25-mile long, that stretches from river in Westchester County and the Bronx. You can bike or walk along the Bronx River Greenway, a scenic trail that follows the Bronx River through parks, wetlands, and historic sites, providing a peaceful escape from the city life.
10. Orchard Beach:
There are a lot of great beaches in NYC. Take a day trip to relax and unwind at Orchard Beach, the Bronx’s only public beach! Swim in the Long Island Sound, sunbathe on the sandy shores, or enjoy a barbecue with friends and family.
Queens
1. Flushing Meadows-Corona Park:
If you’re heading to Queens, you need to visit Flushing Meadows – Corona Park! It’s home to iconic landmarks such as the Unisphere and the Queens Museum. You can rent a paddleboat, visit the Queens Zoo, or catch a game at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
2. MoMA PS1:
For my art lovers, you need to visit MoMA PS1, an affiliate of the Museum of Modern Art dedicated to contemporary art. Spend time exploring experimental exhibitions, outdoor installations, and attend their popular Warm Up summer music series!
3. Socrates Sculpture Park:
Head over to Astoria and walk through Socrates Sculpture Park, an outdoor museum and public park along the East River. Here you can spend time admiring the contemporary sculptures and enjoy waterfront views of Manhattan.

4. Queens Botanical Garden:
For my garden lovers, discover the Queens Botanical Garden’s diverse gardens, including the Fragrance Garden, Rose Garden, and Bee Garden. You can join a guided tour or participate in workshops and events!
5. Rockaway Beach:
My personal favorite beach in New York City is Rockaway Beach! I go every summer and it’s my favorite escape of the city! Here you can lie in sun, surf, and sand. Learn to surf, bike along the boardwalk, or indulge in fresh seafood or drinks at local eateries overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
6. Visit Astoria:
Astoria is a vibrant and fun neighborhood in Queens. I highly recommend exploring Astoria’s cultural scene and diverse culinary options. Visit the Museum of the Moving Image, sample Greek cuisine, and stroll through Astoria Park along the East River.
7. Queens Night Market:
I went to the Queens Night Market, my first time last year and it was AMAZING! It is ver affordable with most meals being $5. Here you can the Queens Night Market in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, featuring international food vendors, performances, and a lively atmosphere every Saturday night during the summer.
8. King Manor Museum:
Step back in time at the King Manor Museum in Jamaica, Queens. Tour the historic home of Rufus King, a signer of the U.S. Constitution, and explore exhibits on American history and its culture.
9. Alley Pond Park:
Another great park to explore is Alley Pond Park. It’s one of Queens’ largest parks and a great place to spend a warm summer day. Hike through forests, wetlands, and explore the park’s natural beauty, including the picturesque Oakland Lake.
10. Visit the Louis Armstrong House Museum:
Discover the life and legacy of jazz legend Louis Armstrong at his former home in Corona, Queens. Here you can take a guided tour of the house and view exhibits showcasing his career and musical influence.
Staten Island
1. Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden:
Heading to Staten Island? Definitely check out Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden. It’s home to historic buildings, art galleries, and beautiful lush gardens. Definitely don’t miss the Chinese Scholar’s Garden and the Staten Island Museum as well.
2. Historic Richmond Town:
Want a to step back in time? Then head to Historic Richmond Town, a living history village showcasing Staten Island’s colonial past. Here you can tour historic homes, museums, and participate in interactive demonstrations.
3. Greenbelt Conservancy:
Another great escape from the bustling city is Greenbelt Convervancy. Here you can hike or bike through the Greenbelt Conservancy, it has various trails and natural areas spanning over 2,800 acres. Explore the forests and enjoy panoramic views of Staten Island.
4. St. George Theatre:
Want to see a show? Catch a show at the St. George Theatre! It’s a historic venue in Staten Island featuring live performances, concerts, and classic film screenings in a beautifully restored setting.
5. Staten Island Ferry:
Taking a ferry is a great summer activity in NYC! Take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry for stunning views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Manhattan skyline—all for free. It’s a must try New York experience.
6. Alice Austen House:
Visit the Alice Austen House. A museum and historic home showcasing the work of pioneering photographer Alice Austen. Here you can discover exhibits on her life and photography, and enjoy views of the New York Harbor.
7. Wolfe’s Pond Park:
Relax at Wolfe’s Pond Park, a waterfront park offering beaches, hiking trails, and picnicking areas. At the park you can enjoy fishing, birdwatching, or simply unwind in a calm natural setting.
8. Garibaldi-Meucci Museum:
Learn about the lives of Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi and inventor Antonio Meucci at the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum in Rosebank, Staten Island. Spend the day exploring the exhibits on their contributions to history.
9. Midland Beach:
Another great beach to visit! Spend a day at Midland Beach, a family-friendly beach with playgrounds, picnic areas, and the historic Ocean Breeze Fishing Pier. Swim in the calm waters of Lower New York Bay and enjoy views of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
10. Fort Wadsworth:
Head to Fort Wadsworth, a historic military site overlooking the entrance to New York Harbor. Here you can walk through tunnels, battery ruins, and enjoy panoramic views of the harbor and the Manhattan skyline.
