21 Best Lake Day Essentials – Ultimate Guide

This blog is about the best lake day essentials you’ll need for your next trip!

Planning a day at the lake? Whether you’re splashing in the water or lounging on the shore, having the right gear can make all the difference.

When I was younger, I grew up going to our lakehouse in Massachusetts and loved spending hours by the lake! As I got older, I’ve had the opportunity to explore other great lakes such as Lake Tahoe in California and Crater Lake in Oregon. Through these experiences, I’ve learned my do’s and don’ts!

Use this guide as your ultimate list of 21 essentials to pack for an unforgettable lake day.

Lake Day Essentials Checklist

1. Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must-have for any lake day! With all that time spent under the sun, it’s easy to get sunburned (and no one wants that). Make sure to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Don’t forget to reapply every couple of hours, especially after swimming, to maintain protection.

2. Swimsuit

Pack your favorite swimsuit for some fun in the water. Whether you’re into swimming, paddleboarding, just soaking up the sun, or taking cute lake pictures, a good swimsuit is essential.

Opt for one that’s comfortable and stays put, so you’re free to enjoy all the lake activities.

3. Towels

Bring a few towels to dry off after a swim or to lay on while sunbathing. Quick-dry towels are especially handy because they won’t stay damp all day. They’re also lightweight and easy to pack, making them perfect for a day at the lake. Consider bringing an extra towel in case one gets too sandy or wet.

4. Water Bottles

Staying hydrated is key, especially under the sun!  Bring plenty of water bottles to keep everyone refreshed throughout the day. Consider insulated bottles that keep your drink cool for hours, even in the heat. Having enough water will keep you feeling good, so you can enjoy all your lake activities.

5. Snacks

Pack a variety of snacks to keep your energy up and is an affordable option. Think sandwiches, fruits, nuts, and chips for easy, satisfying options. A small cooler can help keep everything fresh and delicious throughout the day. Don’t forget some sweet treats to enjoy as a little indulgence while relaxing by the water.

6. Sunglasses

Protect your eyes from the glare of the sun with a good pair of sunglasses. Look for ones with UV protection and polarized lenses for the best defense.

Plus, they’ll keep you looking stylish and prevent you from squinting all day. Having a good pair of sunglasses can make a big difference in comfort and eye protection!

7. Hat

A wide-brimmed hat or a cap can provide extra shade and keep you cool. It’s a simple yet effective way to protect your face and neck from sunburn!

Choose one that’s comfortable and stays on even when the wind picks up. A good hat can also add a fun and stylish element to your lake day outfit.

8. Beach Chairs

Beach chairs are perfect for relaxing by the lake! Look for lightweight, foldable ones that are easy to carry and set up. They offer a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the view without having to sit on the ground (which is not always comfortable). Having a chair can make a big difference in how much you enjoy your time by the water.

9. Blanket

A large, comfy blanket can serve multiple purposes at the lake. Use it for a picnic, as a spot to lay out your towels, or just to sit on while you relax.

Choose one that’s durable and easy to clean, so you don’t have to worry about sand and dirt. A blanket can be a cozy and convenient addition to your lake day setup.

Here are some great options:

10. Waterproof Speaker

Bring a waterproof speaker to enjoy some tunes by the water. It’s a great way to set the mood and make your lake day even more enjoyable. I personally use the JBL speaker whenever I head to the lake or beach.

Just make sure it’s fully charged before you head out, so you don’t run out of battery. Listening to music can enhance the fun and relaxation of your day.

11. Floaties

Inflatable floaties are a hit for both kids and adults. They’re perfect for lounging on the water and can be easily deflated for packing. From simple tubes to elaborate designs, there’s a floatie for everyone to enjoy!

12. First Aid Kit

A small first aid kit can be a lifesaver in case of minor injuries. Pack it with basics like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers. You never know when you might need it, so it’s always better to be prepared. A well-stocked first aid kit can give you peace of mind and keep small accidents from ruining your day.

13. Waterproof Phone Case

A waterproof phone case will keep your phone safe from splashes, accidental drops in the water, and headaches. It also lets you take pictures and videos without worrying about water damage.

Look for one that fits your phone and allows for easy use. This way, you can capture all your lake day memories without any stress.

14. Insect Repellent

Keep the bugs at bay with some insect repellent. Lakes can be a hotspot for mosquitoes and other pests, especially in the evening. Spray or lotion, find one that works best for you to avoid those annoying bug bites. Having insect repellent can make your time at the lake so much more comfortable.

15. Cooler

A cooler is essential for keeping your drinks and snacks cold throughout the day. Choose one that’s big enough to hold all your essentials but still portable. Ice packs or ice blocks can help keep everything cold for longer periods. A good cooler helps you have refreshing beverages and fresh snacks all day long!

16. Beach Umbrella

A beach umbrella provides much-needed shade during the hottest parts of the day. It’s perfect for creating a cool spot to relax and escape the sun’s rays.

Look for one that’s easy to set up and sturdy enough to withstand breezes, we don’t want them falling on us!

17. Dry Bag

A dry bag is perfect for keeping your valuables safe from water and sand. Use it to store items like your phone, keys, and wallet. It’s also great for packing an extra change of clothes that you want to keep dry. A dry bag provides an extra layer of security for your important items.

18. Portable Grill

If you plan on cooking at the lake, a portable grill is a must have item to bring! It’s great for grilling up burgers, hot dogs, and other tasty meals. Make sure to bring charcoal or propane, depending on the type of grill. Cooking at the lake can add a fun and delicious element to your day.

19. Board Games or Cards

Pack some board games or a deck of cards for entertainment when you’re not in the water. They’re great for keeping everyone entertained and can be a fun way to bond with friends and family. Choose games that are easy to pack and set up. Having some games on hand can add to the fun for your lake day.

20. Camera

A good camera is essential for capturing all the special moments of your lake day! Whether you prefer a DSLR, a compact camera, or just your smartphone, make sure it’s ready to go. Snap tons of photos to capture all the fun moments. A camera is perfect for freezing those memories in time, providing you with memories to look back on for years to come!

21. Change of Clothes

Bringing a change of clothes is a smart move for after your day at the lake. Pack something comfortable and dry to change into for the ride home so you don’t have to sit in your wet clothes.

No one wants to be soggy and uncomfortable on the way back! Trust me, your future self (and your car seats) will thank you.
