Your 20s are one of the best times to travel and explore the world. As someone who was fortunate to visit over 25 countries (and counting), don’t wait until after you’ve retired to start traveling. Traveling in your 20s is great for meeting new people, pushing you outside your comfort zone, experiencing different cultures, and so much more!
Traveling doesn’t have to be expensive. I’ve used so many cheap and affordable travels tricks like going somewhere during the offseason, staying in hostels, and joining local walking tours. Being on a budget has never stopped me from having a great time when visiting somewhere new.
This blog is a perfect guide for budget-conscious young travelers. I’ll be showcasing why going to Europe in April is the perfect time to explore Europe without spending a fortune.
Tips for Budget Travel in Europe
Before diving into which cities are great for budget travel in Europe, let’s dive into some tips and tricks you can use to help plan out your trip!
Accommodation Hacks: Finding Cheap Places to Stay
Hostels, hostels, hostels! If you’re looking for the cheapest bang for your buck, then you need to stay at a hostel. They are meant for young travelers, aged 18 – 30. Hostels can be a great place to meet new people, try different excursions, save money on meals, and to find out the best places to go out.
Hostels can be a bit rougher, but there’s always a new hostel popping out that leans towards the cleaner and more luxurious side. Not all hostels are the same. When searching for the right hostel think of what’s important to you.
Questions to consider:
- Do I want to sleep in a co-ed room?
- How much money do I want to spend each night?
- Do I want a party hostel or a quiet one?
- Are social events important to me?
- Do they provide free meals?
- Are they close to important landmarks I want to visit?
- Do I want to be in the city, a town, or at the beach?
Transportation Tips: Getting Around Europe Without Spending a Fortune
If you want to get around for cheap, then you need to focus on being a local. Don’t Uber or taxi everywhere! Do a lot of research before you travel. Check out the transportation systems of the country or city you are visiting. Find out how much their buses or trains are, and download some routes you want to go on before you leave. Always save important addresses that you need as well!
Luckily, Europe has an amazing public transportation system compared to the U.S. It shouldn’t be too difficult for you to learn.
Dining on a Dime: Eating Well While Saving Money
To not spend all of your money while traveling, you’ll need to cook some meals at your hostel, hotel, or Airbnb. Look for places that provide free meals and try to always cook one meal. Then you can look up special deals at local spots, and they will usually be cheaper than the tourist attractions.
This is not to say you don’t need to eat out, but if you want your money to last then don’t eat out all of the time and plan ahead!
Sightseeing Secrets: Free and Discounted Attractions for Young Travelers
Another great bonus of hostels is joining a free walking tours or other cheap daily activities. In most hostels, you don’t even need to be a guest to join these. I always recommend tipping the tour guide after the walking tour to show your appreciation. Plus, most cities have free entrance to certain museums, churches, and other attractions. Before you go, do some research for 5-6 attractions you want to attend and budget for them accordingly.
Which Country in Europe is the Best Cheap Place to Visit in April?
Here are 6 cities to visit in Europe for April on a budget!
Prague, Czech Republic
Prague is an amazing city to visit in your 20s! I went during my junior year abroad during college and I was honestly very impressed. I had no expectations going it. It’s a very affordable and budget-friendly city in the heart of Europe. We went in November, so it was very cold!
April is the perfect time to visit. The temperature is a high of 62F, there’s more sunlight, and fewer tourists are around so it’s a great time to visit.
I stayed in a hostel with my childhood friend, and we were able to see all of their best attractions like the Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, and Old Town Square. Prague has a great nightlife! I recommend going through your hostel and doing a pub crawl.
Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon is one of the hottest destinations right now and rightfully so! I have not been, but I’m planning to! I have some friends who have gone and raved about their trip. They loved the food, wine, colorful city, and all it had to offer. April is a great time to visit Lisbon, due to the off-shoulder (not peak) season. It can be a bit rainy, but it never lasts too long. It’s also a high of 68F, making it one of the warmer cities to visit in Europe.
You can take a free walking tour to learn Lisbon’s history, head to one of the best lookout spots at Miradouro De Santa Luzia, or walk to Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest areas for shopping and cafes.
Athens, Greece
Athens, Greece was one of my favorite cities! My friend was studying abroad in Athens and I went on a girl’s trip to visit her there. Me and three other friends split an Airbnb in Athens and it was under 150 euros for a weekend getaway. In April, the weather is a perfect 68F and there are barely any crowds in the city.
When visiting Athens you need to visit the Acropolis of Athens and the Parthenon. It was incredible to visit these historical landmarks. Plus, there are many affordable restaurants to eat authentic greek food.
Berlin, Germany
Berlin is such a fun and rich city to visit! They have everything from history, art, great food and drinks, and amazing nightlife! In April it is 57F, you’ll definitely need to bundle up when going but don’t let that stop you!
There are a lot of free attractions such as Brandenburg Gate, Memorial To the Murdered Jews of Europe, East Side Gallery, Berlin Wall Memorial, and so many more! Perfect for exploring the city on a budget. For nightlife, pick a party hostel and let them show you around.
Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is a beautiful and diverse city! With their beaches, city attractions, and great nightlife there’s so much to explore. In April it is 67F, nice mild weather with slight chances of rain.
Some great attractions are Ciutadella Park, Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, Picasso Museum, Paruk Güel, Gothic Quarter, and exploring their beaches! If you do decide to go out at night, note that most Spaniards eat dinner around 10 pm. Most of them won’t hit the club until after midnight, at its earliest. I recommend getting tapas and going bar hopping before hitting the club. It’s a marathon not a sprint for their nightlife.
Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is a great affordable city to visit in your 20s! The weather is slightly cooler averaging around 63F, and there are slight chances of rain. However, there are so many free and cheap activities, that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying this city.
The top attractions are Széchenyi Thermal Bath, Central Market Hall, Walking Tours, Heroes Square, Buda Castle, and St.Stephen’s Basilica. There are plenty of affordable eats and great entertainment in Hungary’s Capital!
Final Thoughts
Now before you buy your ticket and visit one (or multiple) of these great cities, always make sure to plan ahead! Think how much you have to spend and don’t break the budget.
