It’s my favorite time of the year, music festival season! I’ve always loved going to concerts growing up, and I’m lucky enough to be born and raised in New York City, where music was everywhere. While writing this blog, I’m preparing to get ready for one of my favorite camping festivals, Bonnaroo.
Whether this is your first time at a camping festival or you’re a seasoned pro, this blog is a great guide for all the camping tips you need before you head out to your next camping festival.

First, why do people camp at music festivals? Honestly, it’s really fun! I’ve gone to music festivals like Governor’s Ball, where it’s great and you get to spend time listening to live music, but it’s always a hassle coming in and out of the festival every day.
When you’re camping at a music festival, you really get to immerse yourself into the festival experience in the best way! At Bonnaroo, besides listening to the music, you can make new friends, go on the Ferris wheel, enjoy local food and vendors, do a 5k run, and so much more! It’s such a unique vibe that really doesn’t feel like anywhere else I’ve ever been.
Essential Tips for Festival Camping
Not every festival is for everyone – and that’s okay! Choosing the right festival for you is essential. For me personally, I know that I wouldn’t be happy at a festival that was only playing electronic music. The best music festivals I’ve been to include a little bit of everything, style-wise. I think that makes it so much better because you can discover so many different types of music that you’ve never even heard before.
Also, make sure you understand the camping options and choose the best camping site for you.

Before you go, definitely make a checklist of EVERYTHING you need! When I went to Bonnarro for the first time, I researched heavily. I heard horror stories of it being too hot or too much rain, and I wanted to prepare for everything.

Pros of Using an RV:

- Convenience: No need to set up tents or worry about weather conditions. Just park and enjoy!
- Community: RV campgrounds foster a sense of camaraderie among fellow festival-goers.
- Security: Your belongings are secure inside the RV.
Cons of Using an RV:
- Cost: RV rentals or ownership can be expensive (usually $1k – $5k), including renting the RV, paying for a camping pass
- Noise: RVs don’t completely shield you from festival sounds, but they are better than tents!
- Maintenance: Regular upkeep is necessary for a smooth experience, changing the water, etc

Tent Camping
Tent Camping is a great option for music festivals! I’ve done tent camping and it’s a great option that can be really fun!
Pros of Tent Camping
- Cost: Usually the most affordable option!
- Community: You will likely make friends with people in your camping area
- Convenience: Easy to set up
Cons of Tent Camping
- Noise: It can and will get loud, definitely bring earplugs!
- Comfort: It can get really hot in the mornings, you will sweat…
- Security: It will be safe, but leave any valuables in your car when you’re away from your camp.

Famous Camping Music Festivals in the United States
Electric Forest
Electric Forest is a multi-genre music festival in Michigan. It’s produced by Madison House Presents and Insomniac Events. They are known for having multiple stages, immersive art, and a diverse lineup.
Past lineups include Pretty Lights, Steve Aoki, and Major Lazer.
Firefly Music Festival
Firefly Music Festival is a music festival on the East Coast in Dover, Delaware. They’re actually not returning this year, but I hope they are for the 2025 season. It’s a great music festival with open space and a mix of great music!
Past lineups included Eminem, Paul McCartney, Halsey, and Dua Lipa.
Bonnaroo Music Festival
Bonnaroo is a Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tenesse, They have around 80,000 attendees each year and it is so fun! The festival is located on a massive 650-acre farm. This was my first camping festival, and it will always have a special place in my heart.
Past lineups included Kendrick Lamar, David Guetta, Elton John, and Pearl Jam.
Coachella Music Festival
Coachella Music Festival is on the West Coast, in the Coachella Valley of the Colorado Desert. It is one of the most popular music festivals in the world! They are known for having the biggest names in music and the tickets are akways very expensive. Most people know Coachella for the influencer scene, but the majority of people who go are everyday normal people.
Past lineups some of my favorite artists like Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Billie Elish, and Bad Bunny.
For First-Time Festival Campers
As I mentioned before, it is always good to do your research before you attend any music festival! You’re here to have fun, but that also means you need to be prepared.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Please please please always have water with you! It will get hot and you will be walking more than you’re used to. When I’m at music festivals, I average 30,000 steps EACH day!
- Have comfortable walking shoes, this will make or break your trip.
- Set up your tent before you start enjoying the festival activities
- Wear what you want, but always bring comfortable clothes. Don’t wear things that will make you too hot or too cold.
- Bring rain boots and ponchos! Last time in Bonnarroo, it rained so hard that people’s campsites were completely flooded.
Food and Drink at Festivals
I’m a vegan, so it is always a bit harder for me than most people, but no matter your dietary needs you can still find delicious food and have a great time at music festivals. Again, do research! Before you go, most camping festivals will tell you which food trucks will be there. I recommend bringing snacks and breakfast. This will help cut down on the cost of buying food every day and will keep you satisfied when you’re hungry.
Handling Festival Weather
Prepare for Rain or Shine! (They might both happen!)
Weather can be unpredictable at festivals, so it’s best to be ready for anything. I’ve honestly experienced great summer weather one day, and torrential rain the next. Pack a rain poncho and waterproof boots in case of sudden showers, and bring plenty of sunscreen and a hat for those hot, sunny days. This way, you’ll be comfortable no matter what Mother Nature throws your way.
Dealing with Extreme Weather Conditions
Festivals can experience extreme weather, from scorching heat to unexpected cold snaps. Stay informed about the weather forecast and plan accordingly. Bring extra layers for warmth, and have a cooling towel or fan for those sweltering days. Being prepared ensures you can keep enjoying the festival without worrying about the weather.
