The Ultimate NYC November Bucket List: 10 Best Things to Do
This blog is about the ultimate NYC November Bucket List (from a local New Yorker!)
November is one of the best months to visit New York City. The crisp air, colorful foliage, and early holiday buzz create a magical atmosphere across the city. It’s that sweet spot before winter fully kicks in, so while it’s chilly, it’s still comfortable enough to explore outside.
Plus, the crowds aren’t as overwhelming as they will be during the peak holiday season in December (at least for the first half of the month). Whether you’re here for a weekend or a longer stay, there’s no shortage of exciting things to do and see in New York City. Here are the best November events and activities NYC has to offer.
NYC November Bucket List
1. Experience the New York City Marathon
The first Sunday in November brings the iconic New York City Marathon, an event that takes over the entire city. Even if you’re not running, it’s one of the most exciting days to be out in NYC. The marathon route winds through all five boroughs, so you can catch the action in neighborhoods like Brooklyn, Queens, or Manhattan.
Some of the best spots to watch are along First Avenue in Manhattan or in Central Park near the finish line. The energy is contagious—New Yorkers come out in masses to cheer on the runners, and the city feels united in celebration. If you plan to attend, definitely pack some snacks, grab a coffee, and find a spot to join in the fun.
2. Visit the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an absolute must-see if you’re in town for the holiday. It’s one of NYC’s most popular events, with giant character balloons, floats, marching bands, and performances that fill the streets of Manhattan.
The parade starts at 77th Street and Central Park West, making its way to Macy’s in Herald Square. If you’re planning to attend, it’s worth arriving early to get a good spot—people start camping out as early as 6 a.m. for the best views.
Not into standing in the crowds? You can catch the balloon inflation the night before on the Upper West Side, which is a fun way to see the parade come to life without battling the parade-day crowd or worrying about the weather.
3. Explore Central Park’s Fall Foliage
November may be your last chance to catch the beautiful fall foliage in Central Park before winter takes over. The trees still hold onto their golden and red leaves for the first part of the month, making it a perfect time for a stroll through the park.
The Mall, Bethesda Terrace, and Bow Bridge are the best spots to see the colors and take great photos. It’s also the ideal time to grab a hot drink from a nearby café and take in the peaceful side of the city. I If you’re lucky, you might catch one of those mild November afternoons when the sun is shining, making it the perfect fall day.
4. Attend the New York Comedy Festival
For comedy fans, November brings the New York Comedy Festival, where some of the biggest names in stand-up hit the stage all over the city. From small clubs to iconic venues like the Beacon Theatre, there’s no shortage of laughs to be had during this week-long event.
It’s a great chance to experience New York’s legendary comedy scene, whether you want to see well-known acts or discover up-and-coming talent. The festival draws huge crowds, so grab your tickets early, and get ready for a night filled with laughter—it’s the perfect way to warm up on a chilly November evening.
5. Go Ice Skating at Bryant Park’s Winter Village
This is one of my favorite activities to do in November! By then, the city’s ice skating rinks are open, and Bryant Park’s Winter Village is one of the best spots to hit the ice. Not only does it offer free admission (you just need to rent skates), but the park also transforms into a holiday market with cozy shops and food vendors.
Skating here is a classic NYC winter experience. Afterward, go for a walk through the Winter Village, grab a hot chocolate, and check out the local artisans selling holiday gifts. It’s an unforgettable way to kick off the holiday season before the crowds really pick up in December.
6. Celebrate Veterans Day at the NYC Veterans Day Parade
On November 11th, New York City honors its veterans with the annual Veterans Day Parade along Fifth Avenue. It’s the largest Veterans Day event in the country and a meaningful way to show appreciation for those who have served.
The parade features marching bands, floats, military vehicles, and veterans from various branches of the armed forces. It’s a powerful experience to watch, especially as it winds past landmarks like the Empire State Building. Whether you have personal connections to the military or just want to show your support, this parade is a moving reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans.
7. Check Out the Holiday Markets
While December is known as the holiday month, the magic starts in November. Many of New York City’s holiday markets open in mid-November, and they’re a great place to find unique gifts, grab a festive treat, and soak in the early holiday season.
The Winter Village at Bryant Park is a favorite, but you can also check out the Union Square Holiday Market or the Columbus Circle Holiday Market. These markets are filled with local vendors selling handmade crafts, jewelry, and delicious snacks & drinks. Even if you’re not shopping, just wandering through the markets is a fun way to get into the holiday mood before the city gets even busier in December.
8. Take in a Broadway Show
November is an ideal time to catch a Broadway show before the holiday crowds flood the theaters. Whether you’re into big musicals or smaller, more intimate plays, Broadway has something for everyone.
Plus, if you’re looking to save a bit of cash, you can find discounted same-day tickets at the TKTS booth in Times Square or score a deal on matinee performances. The warmth of the theater and the excitement of live performances make this a great indoor activity as the temperatures start to drop. There’s nothing quite like the experience of Broadway, and it’s a must if you’re visiting NYC.
9. Walk the Brooklyn Heights Promenade
For a peaceful, scenic escape, head to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. The fall views over the East River with the Manhattan skyline as your backdrop are incredible in November. It’s quieter than some of the more touristy spots, so you can take your time strolling along the waterfront, enjoying the crisp autumn air.
After your walk, you can explore the charming neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights or stop by a nearby café for a warm hot chocolate. It’s a perfect low-key afternoon if you’re looking for something more laid-back but still feels distinctly New York.
10. Don’t Miss the New York Botanical Garden’s Holiday Train Show
Though it’s technically a holiday event, the New York Botanical Garden’s Holiday Train Show kicks off in mid-November, and it’s something you don’t want to miss! This gorgeous display features model trains weaving through a miniature version of New York City, with landmarks made entirely from natural materials like bark, leaves, and seeds.
It’s a remarkable exhibit and a fun, family-friendly way to get into the holiday spirit early. Plus, the Botanical Garden is a peaceful escape from the city, offering beautiful grounds to explore before or after the show.
NYC November Bucket List
November in New York City offers a little bit of everything—fall colors, iconic events, and a touch of holiday magic. The city transitions beautifully from autumn into the early stages of the festive season, making it one of the most exciting and visually stunning times to visit.
Whether you’re here for a short trip or looking to explore like a local, there’s no shortage of exciting things to do. From enjoying the last of the fall foliage in Central Park to immersing yourself in the buzz of the New York City Marathon or the cozy atmosphere of holiday markets, November provides endless opportunities for memorable experiences.
Don’t forget to bundle up in your coziest sweater, grab a hot drink, and take in the sights, sounds, and flavors that make this city so special. Whether you’re skating at Bryant Park or catching a Broadway show, New York in November is truly unforgettable. So get out there and make the most of your visit—you’ll leave with cherished memories and a real taste of what makes NYC so magical this time of year.
