15 BEST Road Trip Essentials For Your Next Trip

This blog is about 15 road trip essentials.

Planning your next road trip? You’ve come to the right place! As someone who has been on dozens of road trips across the USA, from the East Coast to the West Coast and everywhere in between, I’ve learned a lot about what to bring. My experiences have taught me the do’s and don’ts of road trip packing.

Whether you’re a seasoned road tripper or a first-timer, this guide will help you make sure you’re ready for your journey. From comfort to safety, I’ve got you covered so you can have a smooth and enjoyable trip!

Comfortable Clothing

Comfort is key when you’re spending hours in a car! Opt for breathable fabrics and loose-fitting clothes to ensure you stay comfortable throughout your journey. Choose outfits that allow for easy movement and avoid anything too tight or restrictive (trust me).

Don’t forget a cozy hoodie or sweater for those unexpected chilly moments, especially during early morning or late-night drives. Additionally, consider bringing a pair of comfy shoes or slippers to change into when you’re not driving. Dressing in layers is also a good idea! Comfort makes the ride more enjoyable and keeps everyone in good spirits.

Snacks and Drinks

Packing a variety of snacks and drinks is a must. Healthy options like fruits, nuts, and granola bars keep your energy up. Also, stay hydrated with plenty of water, and maybe bring along your favorite travel mug for coffee or tea.

Here are some of my favorite health snack options!

First Aid Kit

A well-stocked first aid kit is crucial for any road trip. Include band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any personal medications you might need. It’s better to be prepared for minor injuries or ailments than to be caught off guard.

Cooler with Ice Packs

A cooler with ice packs is essential for keeping your food and drinks fresh and cool. It’s perfect for storing perishable snacks, sandwiches, and beverages. A good cooler can also save you money by reducing the need for frequent stops at convenience stores or fast food restaurants.

Make sure to pack reusable ice packs to keep everything chilled without the mess of melting ice. This way, you can enjoy refreshing drinks and fresh snacks throughout your trip, keeping everyone happy and well-fed.

Car Charger and Power Bank

Keeping your devices charged is essential. Bring a car charger and a power bank to keep your phone, tablet, or other electronics juiced up. This way, you can stay connected and entertained throughout the trip.

Travel Pillow and Blanket

For those long stretches on the road, a travel pillow and blanket can make a world of difference. They provide comfort for naps and warmth when the air conditioning gets too cold. Plus, they’re great for passengers to snuggle up with.

Toiletries and Personal Care Items

Don’t forget to pack your toiletries and personal care items. Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and wet wipes can help you stay fresh. Also, hand sanitizer and a small bottle of soap are handy for unexpected stops.

Sunglasses and Sunscreen

Protecting your eyes and skin from the sun is important. Pack a good pair of sunglasses and some high-SPF sunscreen. Even inside the car, you can get sun exposure, so it’s best to be prepared.

Entertainment Options

Long drives can get boring, so bring along some entertainment. Load up on music playlists, audiobooks, or podcasts to keep everyone engaged. I always love creating a playlist! You can also bring along travel games or a deck of cards for fun at rest stops.

Consider downloading a few movies or TV shows to watch on a tablet or laptop during breaks. These entertainment options will make the journey enjoyable and help pass the time more pleasantly.

Cash and Cards

Always have some cash on hand! You’ll need it for tolls, parking, or places that don’t accept cards. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Make sure you have your debit and credit cards are easily accessible. It’s also smart to inform your bank about your travel plans to avoid any issues.

Emergency Roadside Kit

An emergency roadside kit is a must-have! It includes items like jumper cables, a flashlight, and basic tools to help you with any emergencies. Additionally, consider adding a tire pressure gauge, reflective warning triangles, and a multi-tool for added safety.

Having these essentials can save you in case of a car breakdown, flat tire, or other unexpected situations on the road. Being prepared with a well-stocked roadside kit ensures you can handle minor issues without stress, keeping your journey smooth and worry-free.

Reusable Water Bottle

A reusable water bottle is eco-friendly and convenient. It keeps you hydrated without the need for frequent stops to buy drinks. Fill it up whenever you get the chance, and you’re good to go.

Trash Bags

Keeping your car clean is easier with trash bags on hand. Use them for wrappers, bottles, and other waste. Having a few small bags makes it easy to manage and dispose of trash at rest stops.

Comfortable Shoes

Whether you’re driving or taking breaks to explore, comfortable shoes are a must. My current favorite are the Dr Scholl’s Women’s Sneakers. Choose shoes that are easy to slip on and off but also provide good support. Your feet will thank you after hours on the road.

Camera

Capture the memories of your road trip with a camera. Whether it’s your phone or a DSLR, having a camera ensures you can document the beautiful scenery and fun moments along the way. Plus, it’s a great way to relive the adventure later.
